Understanding the Elevator Switch
The elevator switch is a key component of an elevator system that ensures safe and effective operation. Having an understanding of the switch and how it works is essential for safe, reliable use.
Elevator switches are a common part of an elevator control system and need to be durable, perform in harsh environments and last long. These factors affect how they are configured, located and activated.
Identifying the Switches
Elevator switches are a critical component of the elevator system. They allow building maintenance personnel to activate various functions and turn certain buttons on or off to help maintain and service the elevators.
There are many different types of switches on an elevator. Some are easy to identify and some are more difficult. To ensure the safety of your passengers, it’s important to know what you are looking for when identifying switches on an elevator.
The most obvious switch you will find on an elevator is the button that controls the door to open or close. This button is often located in the bottom right hand corner of the panel, and it will have a “close” icon next to it to show you where it is.
Other common switches include the alarm bell and the stop button, which are both identified by an icon to make finding them easier. If you press the alarm bell, it will ring to let you know that an emergency is taking place.
Another common switch on an elevator is the stop button, which is used to prevent the elevator from moving until you release the button. Some stop switches are flip-type or push-and-pull, but either way, you must release them before the elevator can continue operating.
An elevator will also have limit switches, which are a vital component in the safety circuit of the elevator. They are designed to prevent the elevator from accelerating beyond its rated speed, and will cut off power if the limits are reached.
In addition to the limit switch, there are several other safety components on an elevator that will keep the elevator running safely. These include a safety clamp, which keeps the elevator in a static position and can even clamp the guide rail; a safety window, which keeps the car in a closed state; and a safety switch, which will cut off power if a safety component fails to work correctly.
A fire service mode is required on all elevators by law, and this allows firefighters to control the elevator in emergencies by driving it to any floor. This can be a dangerous feature to hack, because it can give hackers access to the doors and the security systems.
Identifying the Type of Switch
There are many different types of switches on an elevator, so it is important to identify them correctly before you can use them. The most common types of switch include the car operating panel, the hoistway access switches and key switches controls.
The car operating panel is the main control panel for an elevator and contains all of the controls for controlling the elevator and its doors, including car position, peak up/down and service modes. Often, this is also where the door sensors are located for door opening and closing.
Usually, there is an annunciator panel on this control panel, which tells the operator where to go when they have a hall call. It will also tell the operator what the status of each of the elevators is, so they can decide what to do.
Some of these panels can even have a speaker or intercom to communicate with passengers inside the cab in case of an emergency. However, the speakers on these panels may not be loud enough to alert everyone in the building of an elevator emergency, so it is recommended that a separate voice alarm be installed.
Another type of switch is the hoistway access switch, which allows for the doors to open or close automatically elevator switch when an elevator is about to arrive at a hoistway landing. It can be a toggle or slide switch, and it is usually designed for harsh environment performance and durability.
Lastly, there are key switch controls, which allow for different functions to be turned on and off by building operations personnel. These can be found in locked service cabinet panels.
Typically, these are found above the floor selection buttons and below the operation and emergency buttons. They can have a range of functions, such as Fire Department Control, Close Door Control and Maintenance Functions.
Locating the Switches
Elevator switches are an important part of any elevator system. They help ensure safety and prevent malfunctions. Often, they are also used as an emergency stop button, or in some cases as a telephone for calling for help.
Generally, they are located inside the cabin of an elevator. They are easy to pick up if you’re not careful, so it’s best to put them away after using them.

Another switch may be connected to the elevator’s traction motor, allowing the operator to manually rotate it to change direction or speed.

There are also switches that control the retraction of the safety stops in the elevator. This elevator switch is particularly useful in freight elevators.
For example, there may be a switch connected to the elevator’s control interface that actuates the coil that deploys the retractable stopping elements when it senses a hazardous condition. The coil then reverts to the open position when the condition is no longer considered dangerous.
This is especially beneficial in freight elevators because it makes it possible for the mechanic to move the car back down to the pit without requiring a long downward inspection travel.
Other switches in an elevator can include a smoke vent, which can be used to ventilate the cab in the event of a fire. This is particularly important in high-rise buildings, as smoke can clog the elevator shaft and cause it to break down faster than usual.
One of the most common elevator switches is a mode switch, which is used to control the function of the elevator’s traction motor. It usually has a red LED and is located near the door of the equipment room. The light it produces can be easily seen from the floor, and is usually accompanied by an alarm that goes off when the button is pushed.
Activating the Switch
The switch on an elevator is used to control the operation of the lift. It can also be activated by the user to enable or disable the elevator’s fire features and emergency service.
Generally speaking, an elevator should only be operated by a person who is physically inside the elevator. This is to prevent accidents and to keep smoke and heat out of the elevator.
If the elevator is on fire and you need to get out, activate phase 1 by turning the lock to “Bypass” or “Reset,” then back to “Off.” This will return the entire bank of elevators to the ground floor.
Another method to activate an elevator is by calling it from a secure floor in the building. This is called an emergency call or a panic call, and it’s usually done by the owner or manager of the building.
It’s best to do this as soon as possible. This will minimize damage to the elevator and the people in the building.
To do this, you’ll need a key or a combination lock pick. Once you have these, you can start hacking.
Most modern high-rise buildings have a keyed switch capture station located in the fire control room of the building. This will recall all the elevators in the bank, but it will not work on other floors, so you may need to use a different capture station.
The switch that controls independent service is often labeled as “EXCLUSIVE” and has three positions: Auto, which leaves independent service off; Park, which holds the doors open on the current floor and does not allow the elevator to move; and On, which starts independent service.
This is a great safety feature that can help to save lives in the event of an emergency, as it will allow firefighters to quickly evacuate the area and get out safely. It also has the benefit of preventing smoke and other debris from entering the elevator during a fire.
In addition to a fire control center, some high-rise buildings also have remote capture stations that can be used to recall all the elevators in the building from a location outside of the building. This can be especially helpful in cases of a large fire that could block access to the elevators and make it impossible for fire fighters to access them.
